LOL @ whoever thinks Sam would win. Anyone with a little intelligence can see that Serious Sam is a half assed Duke Nukem knock off. He wouldn't even exist without Duke Nukem. Apr 20, 2018 - Some will question, however, the interest and relevance of the Serious Sam franchise in 2018. Duke Nukem's Forever revival in 2011,. Sam is cocky too, but he doesn't think he's invincible like Duke does. Sam has a computer in his brain, effectively making him smarter and more careful. He can also analyze Duke more who probably doesn't take the fight as 'Serious'. Anyway, Duke will let his guard down and Serious Sam, who's always buisness over pleasure while Duke is. The Xbox edition of Serious Sam had notable differences including the model of Sam being changed from the model of The First Encounter to form a more cartoon style Sam, removing the shades to make him look less like Duke Nukem and more like he does today. The Xbox version includes all of the levels from both of the PC games. I mean, Duke Nukem has taken on multiple armies of aliens alone vs Serious Sam taking on legions upon legions upon legions alone. There isn't necessarily any reason Duke couldn't get just as high a kill count, but he hasn't. Duke also rarely takes on a lot of his foes at once, Sam takes on quite a lot of enemies all at once on a regular basis. Duke Nukem VS Serious Sam is a What-If? Episode of Death Battle. (Cue Invader - Jim Johnston). Beardhammer wrote:The game engine itself is pretty lousy, too, honestly. It doesn't look all amazing - I'd say Source with all settings maxed out looks better and also performs better. At least the textures in the demo were all nice and sharp looking, can't say I've ever felt the same way about a Source game.Do you run Source maxed out? I usually run at just under max settings (I do this in basically every game except for ones that are 10+ years old), and it looked just about as good as DNF running maxed out. Keep in mind, 'max' settings usually requires some.cfg editing here and there - for whatever reason, Source doesn't allow to really max out settings just by selecting 'very high.' I will say that I did like how DNF handled depth of field and dynamic LOD, and it looked quite nice, but I was honestly really turned off by how lousy the physics were. An oversized monster truck rams a pig cop and the pig cop just bounces away like it's made of rubber? Even having the pig cop explode into red mist would be better than THAT.I'm pretty sure DNF is using some version of the Unreal 3 engine, but I can't be certain. It looks similar to Global Agenda in several ways (another game that operates on the Unreal 3 engine.). I played the demo, and while I wasn't impressed, it wasn't terrible. It didn't look great, and I was never wow'd by anything, but it was a fun little romp. Duke says Duke-things and is generally entertaining. The 2 weapon system is definitely the worst part. As mentioned, it places a sniper rifle right when you need it and a rocket launcher right when you need it. However, over the course of 5 minutes, I swapped between a sniper, shotgun, rpg, and shrink ray. So, there was quite the variety, and the rpg has a lock on making it useful against pig cops as well, not just vehicles. If they can manage to keep the variety of weapons available so you can swap around at anytime, it might work. However, I think it might have just been set up like that specifically for the demo. I assume the shrink ray will still just be a novelty that never gets used (it basically was in Duke3D as well). So, nothing amazing, but good mindless fun. I'm really hoping someone mods it so you can carry all weapons. ProZac wrote:I played the demo, and while I wasn't impressed, it wasn't terrible. I'm really hoping someone mods it so you can carry all weapons. In all honesty, Duke has nothing on Turok for sheer weapon variety. I still consider the Ceberal Bore to be one of the most amusing guns in any shooter. And I seem to remember Rage Wars having an Inflator/Deflator weapon that would either inflate someone until they exploded or deflate them until they died from emaciation. Then again, Duke3D had a grow ray (maybe it was just shrink ray alt-fire. Been way too long) that made things explode, too. I'm quite liking it. It's a good over-the-top mindless shoot-em-up. There is something resembling a story that serves merely to punctuate the carnage, and a couple of mini-game type puzzles during the quiet bits. The shrink ray makes an appearance, more as a novelty than a serious weapon. The Duke says cheesy things, and there are a lot of references to the earlier games (I played the Duke3D multiplayer on a friend's console back when I was a kid, but other than that I don't really have much experience of the early Duke games). The visuals are okay, but aren't going to win any awards.Since I'm not a long-standing Duke fan, I can judge the game on its own merits. Does the game stand on its own merits? It has enough variation that you don't get bored of shooting up aliens, the boss fights are satisfying to complete, and the gaudiness and absurdity of the whole thing has a certain charm to it. Worth 30 quid? Unless you're a hardcore Duke Nukem fan, wait until it's on sale. I'll almost feel sorry for them if they get a bad review from GameSpy and PC Gamer. The game feels like a refurbished 2004 title to include all the trappings and limitations of modern console shooters. Which is probably exactly what it is too. So, so many invisible walls. By no means groundbreaking or a classic, but I doubt it'd have gotten nearly the hate it has been in reviews. Suprising I like it actually, since I usually cannot stand slow games. Is the ending any good? I never got too see it because I only ever played the full game co-op.//Edit: Second one too, I never saw either.SS1: Sam takes off in the giant spaceship that arrives at the great pyramid after beating the gigantic final boss (only to have it go down at the start of SS2).SS2: Sam gets to the Holy Grail at that church beyond the Corridor of Death before Mental and has a funny conversation with him in the confession booth. Serious Sam OnlineYou see him taking off for Mental's world in a new spaceship.I enjoy SS2 more than SS1 overall. The sequel has some gimmicky trap rooms that are more frustrating than fun, but the bosses are more challenging rather that just being huge and amazing to look at the first time around. My problem with SS was the predictable scripted battles. Every time you walked into a large courtyard with a closed door on the other side, you just knew you were going to be faced with wave after wave of spawning enemies. All you had to do was kill and survive until the script was finished and the door opened. No logic to it, no way to change the odds or influence how the level played. Just a big open area with a series of unoriginal, scripted enemy attacks. Fine maybe once or twice in the game but just plain boring when it happens on almost every level.Another gripe I had was the copy of SS I got had the Voodoo3 card in its recomended spec section on the cover. However, open up the case and burried in the manual was information telling you that voodoo cards had compatability problems and they gave links to third party drivers that may be able to resolve the problem. At the time I had a voodoo3, and the stock drivers certainly did not work well with SS.Nothing wrong with Croteam not supporting the voodoo3. It was on its way out even when SS first came out, but there is something wrong with telling you it is the recommended card for the game when they know it has some quite nasty graphical problems when using its own drivers.
